A FootsEye Tour of the PCMagcom Labs With the Spy Video TRAKR

first_imgHere’s a look at the PCMag.com Labs as only an electronic toy can see it. This video was shot with the Wild Planet Spy Gear Spy Video TRAKR, and while it doesn’t look all that great, just the fact that it can shoot it is pretty neat. The remote control spy video car is available for $129.95, but Wild Planet might have something even more advanced coming down the line. We’ll find out this weekend, at Toy Fair 2011. In the meantime, check out the video, after the jump.last_img

Google boosts maximum Android app size to 4GB

first_imgIt’s a darn good thing most Android phones ship with a microSD expansion slot. Why? Because now that Google is allowing developers to submit Android apps and games up to 4GB in size, you’re going to need a little extra space. The maximum size of a .APK hasn’t changed — they’re still limited to 50MB to “ensure secure on-device storage,” according to Google. The additional 4GB can be passed along in the form of two expansion files using whatever file type the developer chooses. When you browse an app in the Android Market that takes advantage of this expanded storage, you’ll see its total size displayed. That way you won’t be surprised when a 50MB .APK starts pulling down another couple of gigs after you install it.Google also notes that newer devices will automatically grab the expansion files when the .APK download finishes. To support older devices, they’ve provided a download library that developers can utilize. It will download files when an app is first run — which means you could be looking at a hefty delay before being able to play that incredible new game you downloaded on your phone. Hopefully Google will offer some specifics as to which phones count as “newer” and which don’t, so that we’re not left guessing which group our devices fall into.So why the massive increase? It’s no secret that Google wants to make sure Android offers a very compelling gaming experience. With Google TV’s latest incarnation looking a bit more polished and Android hardware more capable than ever of playing high-quality games, those extra megs and gigs will offer developers a way to do something on Android that they can’t on other mobile platforms.More at Android Developerslast_img read more

Drug addict went off the wall robbing shops two weeks after release

first_img Friday 10 Feb 2017, 6:20 AM Image: PA Archive/PA Images A DRUG ADDICT who relapsed two weeks after his release from a four-year prison sentence went “off the wall” robbing shops over nine days in order to fund his habit, a court has heard.Laurence Bryan (36) was drug-free on his release from prison but relapsed following a family argument and robbed multiple shops at knifepoint in order to get money. He told gardaí after his arrest he had been taking as much heroin and crack cocaine as he could get his hands on. He said he didn’t intend to hurt anyone but needed the money for drugs.Bryan, of Brookview Crescent, Tallaght, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to four robberies and two attempted robberies at shops in the Tallaght area between 31 March and 8 April 2016.Bryan has 132 previous convictions including a five-and-a-half-year sentence with the final 18 months suspended imposed by Judge Mary Ellen Ring in 2014 for previous robberies.During that sentence hearing the court heard Bryan had committed nine robberies in seven days in 2013 and had been spending €450 per day to feed his crack cocaine habit.Yesterday Judge Melanie Greally revoked the 18-month suspended portion of the previous sentence and adjourned sentencing on the new offences until October 2018. She ordered an updated probation report dealing with the residential treatment options available to him.She told Bryan that she was not making any promises but it appeared that four years in prison had not served him or the community well.“You were back to square one within a number of weeks,” Judge Greally said “so it is clear some alternative to a sentence, even with a suspended period, will be needed to break the cycle”.Sarah Jane O’Callaghan BL, defending, said her client had been in a “protective environment” while in prison and had been drug free on his release. She said following a family argument two weeks after his release he had left the house and bought crack cocaine and heroin. She said he had then gone “off the wall”.She said he had very tragic and difficult personal circumstances including his brother being shot and witnessing his two-year-old sister being run over by a bus when he was ten years old.Counsel said he had done very well in school before he began dabbling in drugs as a 16-year-old.O’Callaghan said her client would need multifaceted supports in place on release to avoid him falling into drug use again. She said he had insight into how his victims felt and the carnage he was causing.Comments have been disabled as a person is awaiting sentencingRead: Girl feared she’d be raped after two 17-year-olds bundled her into carRead: ‘She died alone and unaided’: Woman jailed for killing her cousin http://jrnl.ie/3231898 Drug addict went “off the wall” robbing shops two weeks after release from prison Laurence Bryan was drug-free on his release from prison but relapsed following a family argument. Flooded Colorado towns clean up as rescues continue

first_imgESTES PARK, Colo. — Weary Colorado evacuees have begun returning home after days of rain and flooding, but Monday’s clearing skies and receding waters revealed only more heartbreak: toppled houses, upended vehicles and a stinking layer of muck covering everything.Rescuers grounded by weekend rains took advantage of the break in the weather to resume searches for people still stranded, with 21 helicopters fanning out over the mountainsides and the plains to drop supplies and airlift those who need help. The confirmed death toll stood at four, with two women missing and presumed dead. The number of missing people was difficult to pinpoint, but it has been decreasing. The state’s count fell Monday from just over 1,200 to about half that. State officials hoped the overall number would continue to drop with rescuers reaching more people and phone service being restored.“You’ve got to remember, a lot of these folks lost cellphones, landlines, the Internet four to five days ago,” Gov. John Hickenlooper said on NBC’s “Today” show. “I am very hopeful that the vast majority of these people are safe and sound.”Residents of Hygiene returned to their small community east of the foothills to find mud blanketing roads, garages, even the tops of fence posts. The raging St. Vrain River they fled three days earlier had left trucks in ditches and carried items as far as 2 miles downstream.last_img read more

WoW Cataclysm sells 47 million copies in first month

first_imgTechnically World of Warcraft: Cataclysm shouldn’t class as a game in its own right as it’s an expansion to an existing game. But in terms of sales, it still counts as a release and therefore can break sales records. And it’s with little surprise that we find Blizzard’s latest MMO expansion has broken PC game sales records.Having been released on December 7, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm managed to rack up 4.7 million sales by the end of 2010. That sets a new record for PC game sales in a single month. The huge sales were helped by the fact that Blizzard did a simultaneous release across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau followed two days later. As for how the actual sales broke down, 3.3 million were pre-orders shipped on day one, the other 1.4 million were sold during the rest of December with many likely finding a place under Christmas trees.AdChoices广告While 4.7 million copies sold may seem like a lot, it only accounts for just over a third of the World of Warcraft player base currently estimated at more then 12 million players. It’s inevitable that many of those players will end up purchasing the Cataclysm expansion eventually as they continue to eat through the content offered in the original game and other expansions.Read more at the Blizzard press release, via 1UPMatthew’s OpinionBlizzard can seemingly do no wrong with its money-printing MMO. Everyone at the company and at owner Activision will be extremely happy with these sales figures. Inevitably the focus will soon turn to the next expansion, but just as importantly discussions as to what game will eventually replace WoW.As we have seen with other popular MMOs like Everquest, even when subscriber numbers start to drop off many years after launch it can be worthwhile supporting a game with continued new content. WoW will still be online in 5 years time or even 10, it may be the case that we have a WoW 2 by then, but the original will still have a dedicated player base Blizzard would do well to support.last_img read more

first_img November 19, 2008 – U.S. Reps. John Dingell (D-MI), chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Bart Stupak (D-MI), chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, yesterday launched an investigation into whether managers within the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) knowingly corrupted the scientific review process and approved or cleared medical device applications in violation of laws and regulations designed to assure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices. The investigation was prompted by a letter sent in October, written on behalf of a large group of CDRH scientists and physicians who stated CDRH managers have “corrupted and interfered with the scientific review of medical devices.””These allegations are deeply concerning, and we intend to uncover whether any FDA activity has compromised the health and safety of America consumers,” Dingell said. “I commend the FDA scientists for courageously sounding the alarm on what appears to be a serious problem. I look forward to pursuing the steps necessary to ensure that the medical devices Americans depend on are safe and effective.””Our investigations have found that the FDA has allowed contaminated food and unsafe drugs to enter the market, and now serious allegations have been raised about the scientific integrity of the FDA medical device approval process,” Stupak said. “Although the FDA has launched its own investigation into this matter, no corrective action has been taken. The committee intends to learn what action the FDA plans to take to ensure the integrity of the medical device approval process and prevent retaliation against the scientists who blew the whistle on these activities.”The lawmakers said the information they were sent from FDA employees showed what they considered compelling evidence to support the charges that senior managers within CDRH “ordered, intimidated and coerced FDA experts to modify their scientific reviews, conclusions and recommendations in violation of the law.” The CDRH scientists also claim CDRH managers ordered them to make safety and effectiveness determinations that are not in accordance with scientific regulatory requirements, to use unsound evaluation methods, and accept clinical and technical data that is not scientifically valid. They also claimed some information was not obtained in accordance with legal requirements, such as obtaining proper informed consent from human subjects.Documentary evidence reviewed by the Committee on Energy and Commerce Committee indicates CDRH scientists who raised concerns up their chain of command experienced reprisals for their insistence on adherence to a scientific and regulatory basis for medical device review. To protect these scientists who brought their concerns to the attention of the committee, their identities will not be disclosed.Since January 2007, the committee and its subcommittee on oversight and investigations have been investigating the ability and commitment of the FDA to protect Americans from unsafe food, drugs, and medical devices. Survey Reveals Mixed Expectations for Home Prices Credit Access

first_img January 14, 2014 439 Views Survey Reveals Mixed Expectations for Home Prices, Credit Access in Data Sharecenter_img A recently launched survey from “”New York’s Federal Reserve Bank””:http://newyorkfed.org/index.html shows consumer expectations for the next year remaining fairly flat in December.[IMAGE]The New York Fed released on Monday its first monthly “”Survey of Consumer Expectations””:http://newyorkfed.org/microeconomics/sce/ (SCE), an Internet-based survey of a rotating panel of approximately 1,200 household heads. Topics addressed in the survey include inflation, prices, the labor market, and household finance.According to the December survey, inflation expectations for the year were little changed from the past several months, with consumers expecting a median inflation rate of 3.14 percent over the year and a rate of 3.30 percent over the next three years.[COLUMN_BREAK]The median expected rate of house price growth was 3.9 percent, a slip from November’s prediction of 4.5 percent. In terms of household finances, the median one-year-ahead prediction for income growth was down slightly to 2.0 percent, while spending growth expectations were up to 4.7 percent.Despite the expected increase in expenses, the probability of consumers being unable to make a minimum debt payment at any point in the next three months slipped nearly a full percentage point, falling to 14.9 percent. Consumers were slightly more optimistic about credit access, with 19.3 percent saying credit will be easier to obtain in the next year. Reflecting on 2013, 17.1 percent of respondents said credit grew more accessible than the year before, while 47.8 percent said conditions became tighter.Expectations for moving sometime in the next year remained flat at around 20 percent; there was no specification for whether respondents plan to move into a house or an apartment. For the labor market, hopes were slightly lower than in November, with median expected earnings growth falling slightly to 1.81 percent. About 39 percent of those surveyed expect to leave their job in the coming year–either voluntarily or involuntarily–and about 45.9 percent said they expect they could find a new position in the next three months if they left their job today. Power cuts across Cyprus following malfunction

first_imgPower cuts were recorded in areas across Cyprus on Tuesday morning due to a technical problem at the Vasilikos power plant, the electricity authority (EAC) said.EAC spokeswoman Christina Papadopoulou said power had been cut off in some areas at 8:30am and the problem had been resolved by 9:05am with electricity back in all affected locations.“It was a technical issue, there was no malicious intent.”The transmission operator has a programme whereby whenever the EAC has problems, the operator removes premises from the grid so supply can equal demand, Papadopoulou said. The way in which areas are taken off the grid is done in stages but across the country, starting with locations without hotels or hospitals for instance.Parliament was also temporarily affected pushing Tuesday’s work back a little.
