Putting your brain in the drivers seat w Video

first_img More information: autonomos-labs.com/ A team of German researchers, led by Raul Rojas, an AI professor at the Freie Universität Berlin, have created a car that can be driven entirely by human thoughts. The car, which has been given the name BrainDriver, was shown off to the world in a video that highlighted the thought-powered driving system on a trip to the airport. (PhysOrg.com) — Picture driving your car without ever touching the wheel, driving a vehicle that is so user responsive to you that it is literally jacked into your thoughts. It sounds like the technology of the future, something out of a sci-fi movie doesn’t it? Well, as it turns out, the future is now. New way to guide a car: With your eyes, not hands The BrainDriver records brain activity with the help of an Emotiv neuroheadset, a non-invasive brain interface based on electroencephalography sensors, that was made by the San Francisco-based company Emotiv. The neuroheadset was originally designed for gaming. Like most new devices the human has to be trained in order to use the interface properly. After some practice runs, moving a virtual object, the user can be up and driving a modified Volkswagen Passat Variant 3c. The driver’s thoughts are able to control the engine, brakes, and steering of the car. Currently, there is a small delay between the drivers thoughts and the cars response. No word yet on how detailed controls will be for other necessary functions, for example opening the gas cap to fill up. The researchers selected the headset after rejecting several other options, including the iPad and eye-tracking devices. The car is currently only in the prototype phase and no decision has been made as to whether or not this car will ever be made available to the public when it becomes roadworthy. Researchers suggest Greenland ice shelf melting faster due to embedded dust particles

first_img Citation: Researchers suggest Greenland ice shelf melting faster due to embedded dust particles (2014, June 9) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-06-greenland-ice-shelf-faster-due.html Scientists have known for some time that the edges of the Greenland’s ice shelf are slowly melting due to global warming, but recently, they’ve begun to uncover evidence that suggests the interior of the shelf is melting too—a worrisome finding because it could mean higher ocean levels sooner than most models have predicted. Greenland’s interior is both mountainous and is located at a high latitude, which means temperatures remain below freezing all year around. But, that’s not enough apparently, to keep the ice from melting anyway. This, the researchers on this new effort, claim, is because dust from parts of the arctic that have seen ice disappear over the past decade blows onto the ice shelf and becomes embedded in the ice. When the sun shines on the ice, more of the heat is absorbed by the dust particles and held, causing some of the ice on top of the shelf to melt.Prior to this new effort, scientists have attributed a darker looking Greenland, as seen from satellites, to an increase in ice crystal granule size, which they note, comes about due to slightly higher temperatures, as the atmosphere over the island, like the rest of the planet, slowly warms. This new research contradicts that theory and suggests Greenland’s ice shelf is melting faster than anyone else has predicted. As the ice covering melts, sea levels rise—just how fast has been a matter of opinion, with different models offering different estimates. The researchers on this new effort suggest that as the arctic warms, and more ice near the edges melts, exposing bare ground, more dust will settle inland, causing more warming, and on and on creating a cycle that likely will only end when the entire shelf is bereft of ice. If that happens, sea levels would rise as much as 24 feet, inundating many coastal urban areas and completely covering many islands that are now inhabited by people. Journal information: Nature Geoscience More information: Contribution of light-absorbing impurities in snow to Greenland’s darkening since 2009, Nature Geoscience (2014) DOI: 10.1038/ngeo2180AbstractThe surface energy balance and mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet depends on the albedo of snow, which governs the amount of solar energy that is absorbed. The observed decline of Greenland’s albedo over the past decade1, 2, 3 has been attributed to an enhanced growth of snow grains as a result of atmospheric warming1, 2. Satellite observations show that, since 2009, albedo values even in springtime at high elevations have been lower than the 2003–2008 average. Here we show, using a numerical snow model, that the decrease in albedo cannot be attributed solely to grain growth enhancement. Instead, our analysis of remote sensing data indicates that the springtime darkening since 2009 stems from a widespread increase in the amount of light-absorbing impurities in snow, as well as in the atmosphere. We suggest that the transport of dust from snow-free areas in the Arctic that are experiencing earlier melting of seasonal snow cover4 as the climate warms may be a contributing source of impurities. In our snow model simulations, a decrease in the albedo of fresh snow by 0.01 leads to a surface mass loss of 27 Gt yr−1, which could induce an acceleration of Greenland’s mass loss twice as large as over the past two decades5. Future trends in light-absorbing impurities should therefore be considered in projections of Greenland mass loss. (Phys.org) —A team of planetary scientists with members from several research centers in France, has developed a theory that suggests that one of the reasons that Greenland’s ice shelf is melting faster than models suggest, is because of embedded dust particles that hold more heat. In their paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the researchers describe how an analysis of satellite data over a several year period (2009-2013) convinced them that dust particles in the ice are responsible for the accelerated loss of ice covering the island. Huge population fluctuations could have preceded passenger pigeon extinction

first_imgJuvenile (left), male (center), female (right), by Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Credit: Public Domain Citation: Huge population fluctuations could have preceded passenger pigeon extinction (2014, June 17) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-06-huge-population-fluctuations-passenger-pigeon.html © 2014 Phys.org In the 1800s, observers reported flocks of passenger pigeons blanketing the sky. James Audubon, the artist and ornithologist, once described a flock of passenger pigeons blocking the sun for three consecutive days. Population estimates for the beginning and middle of the 19th century ranged from three to five billion. Within a human lifespan, the species was extinct. What caused the birds to disappear so suddenly? Previous researchers blamed human hunting and deforestation. However, Li and his team thought changes in the environment, independent of human activity, could have caused the population to fluctuate. To determine past population sizes, the researchers mapped the passenger pigeon genome, using DNA from three museum specimens collected across the birds’ feeding range, and compared it with the genome of the modern domestic pigeon. They found that the passenger pigeon’s effective population size, the number of individuals needed to produce the amount of genetic variation found in the species, was only about 330,000. This showed the population had not always been in the billions. Instead, it fluctuated, rising rapidly during population outbreaks and then declining again. When the researchers reconstructed the birds’ genetic history, they found that population changes corresponded with the Earth’s climate history. The population shrunk during the last Ice Age and rebounded after the glaciers retreated. The team also looked at the availability of acorns, the birds’ main food, over the past 21,000 years. A study of fossil pollen records showed that oak cover has been decreasing since about 9,000 years ago. The decline in oak cover would have caused a corresponding decline in the pigeon population.Li’s team think European immigrants to North America could have reversed the downward trend temporarily, causing the population surge that resulted in flocks of passenger pigeons blotting out the sun. Agricultural crops would have provided the birds with more food, compensating for the loss of oak cover. By driving out Native Americans, the Europeans could have contributed to the pigeon population explosion; Native Americans were active passenger pigeon hunters. Ther researchers believe that by the late 1800s, the downward trend had reasserted itself. This, combined with human exploitation, resulted in rapid extinction. Journal information: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Phys.org) —In the 19th century, billions of passenger pigeons crowded the skies of North America. By 1914, the birds had become extinct. Previously, ecologists thought human activity was responsible for the passenger pigeon’s sudden, rapid demise. Now, Shou-Hsien Li of National Taiwan Normal University and colleagues have found that changes in environmental conditions may have caused passenger pigeon populations to fluctuate dramatically. A natural decline in population, combined with human activity, may have resulted in extinction. The research appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.center_img Explore further Long-extinct passenger pigeon finds a place in the family tree This document is subject to copyright. More information: Drastic population fluctuations explain the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon, Chih-Ming Hung, PNAS, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1401526111AbstractTo assess the role of human disturbances in species’ extinction requires an understanding of the species population history before human impact. The passenger pigeon was once the most abundant bird in the world, with a population size estimated at 3–5 billion in the 1800s; its abrupt extinction in 1914 raises the question of how such an abundant bird could have been driven to extinction in mere decades. Although human exploitation is often blamed, the role of natural population dynamics in the passenger pigeon’s extinction remains unexplored. Applying high-throughput sequencing technologies to obtain sequences from most of the genome, we calculated that the passenger pigeon’s effective population size throughout the last million years was persistently about 1/10,000 of the 1800’s estimated number of individuals, a ratio 1,000-times lower than typically found. This result suggests that the passenger pigeon was not always super abundant but experienced dramatic population fluctuations, resembling those of an “outbreak” species. Ecological niche models supported inference of drastic changes in the extent of its breeding range over the last glacial–interglacial cycle. An estimate of acorn-based carrying capacity during the past 21,000 y showed great year-to-year variations. Based on our results, we hypothesize that ecological conditions that dramatically reduced population size under natural conditions could have interacted with human exploitation in causing the passenger pigeon’s rapid demise. Our study illustrates that even species as abundant as the passenger pigeon can be vulnerable to human threats if they are subject to dramatic population fluctuations, and provides a new perspective on the greatest human-caused extinction in recorded history.last_img read more

Archeologist urges researchers to study Libya from afar during wartime

first_img Libya, di Lernia, points out, is a major area of study for archeologists and historians—prior research has suggested that before the arrival of the Saharan desert, the area was green, even at one point, hosting the largest lake on the planet. Northern Africa, including Libya has a long, rich history with many prominent historical sites, some of which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. But since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi nearly four years ago, the area has seen little but strife. As different groups vie to fill the power vacuum, war and chaos have reigned and along with it, little regard for the historical value of artifacts and ancient ruins. Sites have been defaced, ransacked and in some cases even ruined by exploding rockets. Also, shrines have been destroyed by people who felt messages on walls from ancient times conflicted with current views—robbers have pillaged sites looking for artifacts to sell on the black market, and other sites have served as staging areas for raging battles.Di Lernia is not suggesting that researchers throw caution to the wind by venturing into the war-torn country, instead he is suggesting that other forms of research continue during this time of unrest. He notes that study of artifacts that have been taken out of the country could be done, also digital analysis could be undertaken of documented material. Researchers could also study satellite imagery or use other remote study techniques. He also urges institutions in other countries to invite Libyan scientists to join their programs, thus helping ensure that Libya will not lose its pool of talent, as has been the case with other war-torn countries, such as Syria. He suggests that such measures are the only way to keep Libyan research alive, and is calling on the scientific community to join him in preserving as much of the historical evidence as possible in a country whose future is still very much in doubt. Whats Cooking

first_imgBe it seasoned chefs or novice cooks who have discovered their innate skills for cooking, baking, grilling etc…., all are now on a roll not just inside their kitchens but in bookstores too, dishing out one culinary tome after another.Cookbooks have taken a jump in quality as well as quantity in the past decade with more and more of them hitting the already overflowing well-stocked shelves of book shops and still managing to maintain the element of variety, so say several cooks who have turned authors. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’‘Ten years ago, the choice of cookbooks was fairly limited. With the opening up of the culinary scene in India, the demand for more mainstream cookbooks has risen sharply. There is huge demand for cookbooks that offer much more than recipes. And hence we get to see a variety of cookbooks,’ says celebrity chef Aditya Bal, who has compiled his recipes into The Chakh Le India Cookbook.Moving beyond books meant to be read by aspiring chefs or housewives who wished to enhance their culinary skills, the genre of cookbooks has advanced to catering to all kinds of Indian and global cuisine. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with Netflix‘Earlier the cookbooks used to have typical shahi paneer, dal makhni, butter kitchen type recipes but nowadays we can get cookbooks to suit everybody’s needs,’ says chef and host of TV show Master Chef India (season 2) Vikas Khanna whose cookbooks titled My Great Indian Cook book and Khanna Sutra were published by Penguin and Om Books recently. With the multiple avatars of cookbooks the choice of categories for cookbooks have also widened. These days you can find books as per state’s cuisine and as per lifestyle as well. ‘The world has shrunk and we are interested in all kinds of cuisine. Ingredients are easily available in most major cities that one can cook from home. Whole lot of regional cookbooks have come into the market and it is no longer a niche market. Fusion cookbooks are available,’ says Chandra Padmanabhan author of Southern Flavours. Not only have the number of cookbooks available in the market soared up in the previous few years they are also reporting good sales.‘A decade ago nobody would have bought a cookbook worth Rs 1,000 but my all books are priced in the (rupees) 800-1500 range and all of them have been selling well. This shows that cookbooks have become more acceptable and the demand has also increased,’ says Vikas. With the trend of turning vegetarian becoming a fashion statement, vegetarian cookbooks have become another interesting category.‘Cookbooks have moved ahead from just providing recipes. These days chefs add much more to the cookbooks like various anecdotes, health tips, alternative ingredients and much more,’ says Anuradha Sawhney who has authored the cookbook for vegetarian lovers titled The vegan kitchen Bollywood style.‘I believe the main reason for this change is increased awareness amongst people, especially with reference to their health. Today, it is possible to find a cookbook which can guide people to reverse these lifestyle diseases without using any medication’ says Anuradha.More state specific cuisine books have also rolled into the market recently with the most recent ones being Pondicherry Kitchen and Southern Flavours by Westland books.‘Pondicherry Cuisine has been an untouched area when it comes to cookbooks. Cooking is an art and fine chemistry so why any area should be untouched especially when it offers potpourri of flavours,’ says Lourdes Tirouvanziam-Louis, author of Pondicherry Kitchen.Gujarati Kitchen, Flash in the Pan, Thinner Dinner, Simple Cooking for the desperate housewife and The quick cook-60 minute menus are other interesting books in the category.Another one of-its-kind cook book is A Memsahib Cooks, a cookbook exclusively dedicated to Army kitchens published by Roli Books.‘The layout of the book is not based on food categories but the events in the lives of army families. In the Army there is no definite pattern…one can be living in a beautiful old home in one station, or a broken down hut in the next. One can wait for months to be allotted appropriate accommodation and the shortcomings of the kitchens/facilities non-withstanding, hospitality continues at its best,’ says the author Kikki Sihota. Physical activities may cut risk of death from liver disease

first_imgWalking and muscle-strengthening activities may significantly reduce the risk death from liver disease, a study has found. Researchers said that the findings may help provide specific exercise recommendations for patients at risk for cirrhosis and its complications. “Our findings show that both walking and strength training contribute to substantial reductions in risk of cirrhosis-related death, which is significant because we know very little about modifiable risk factors,” said researchers. “The benefit of exercise is not a new concept, but the impact of exercise on mortality from cirrhosis and from liver cancer has not yet been explored on this scale.” Also Read – Add new books to your shelfResearchers collected data from 68,449 women and 48,748 men who did not have any known liver disease at the start of the study. Web series dont have time constraint

first_imgAfter garnering praise and popularity in Bengali films, actress Anindita Bose has stepped into the world of web series. In an exclusive interview with Millennium Post, the ‘Skyfire’ actress talks about her debut in web space, experiences of sharing screen with co-actors, industry scenario and much more…. Recently you did a web series ‘Skyfire’. How was the response from the fans? I have received messages from the fans and they really liked the show because, for them, it is a new concept. I had really high hopes from the show as no one in India had done a sci-fi thriller in the web space before us. And I am overwhelmed to see such fantastic response from audience. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf What prompted you to take up this role? There are a list of reasons behind it. I chose this role because of the story first of all. Everything about it was extremely interesting. Secondly, to be a part of India’s first ever Indian sci-fi thriller was a pretty huge deal. And lastly, Zee5 is producing out of the box content and to be part of one its shows which has a fantastic cast including Prateik, Sonal, Jishu was once in a lifetime opportunity; and that’s why I went ahead with it. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsive Is there any plan for Skyfire season 2 and will you be the part of it? Yeah, there will be a season 2 of the show but I can’t reveal whether I will be the part of second season or not. You have to wait and watch. Tell us something about your role in another upcoming web series ‘Thinkistan’? Basically I debuted in web space with ‘Thinkistan’ but ‘Skyfire’ released earlier and became my first web show. ‘Thinkistan’ is to do with what goes on in an advertisement agency and the story dates back to 1996 . It gives a detailed view of how the ad world used to work at that time, how the iconic ads (like that of Fevicol and Dhara) were made and much more. I am playing the role of creative head of this agency. How was your experience working with other co-actors on the set? Since ‘Thinkistan’ is an office drama, we had to show that all of us knew each other very well and that there was a chemistry between all the characters. So, our director N Padmakumar made sure that we went through a rigorous workshop before we start shooting. In that duration, we worked so closely that when we actually started shooting, it felt like a get-together/party. It was one of my best ever experiences. Shooting for ‘Skyfire’ was again amazing as Prateik Babbar is a very fun loving person kept us entertained all the time. Also, working with Jishu Sengupta was equally fabulous. What made you shift your focus from Bengali films to Hindi web series?I have not completely shifted to Hindi industry as I am right now in Kolkata and working for two projects over here. But I was always keen on working in Mumbai as it is such a huge industry. I have already made my place in Tollywood as I am very comfortable over here and people know me, but I want to expand my horizons now. How different is web series from other mediums? I think for a web series, we shoot for 60 to 65 days and for movies, everything has to be very concise because the story has to be portrayed in 2 hours time. But when you are doing a web series, you really get time to play out a story in a better way. Otherwise, the technicalities and the craft are the same in all platforms. To what extent do you think the film industry has evolved since you started your career? I feel earlier the industry was more focused on the looks of the actors. But over the years now, storytelling and the script has become the focus area. I think the audience like to watch good content and that’s why looks don’t matter anymore. What are your future plans, are you working on any project? I am working for a project in Mumbai which should come out sometime in next year. I can’t reveal much about it. What is more important for you….playing different characters or bagging big roles? For me, it has always been the character.last_img read more

The Crazy Story of the Insane Man who Shot John Wilkes Booth

first_imgIn April of 1865, the American Civil War was finally over except for a few battles in the Western theater by troops who were unaware of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender. Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president, had just been relieved of an enormous burden and decided to take an evening to relax at a performance at Ford’s Theatre before he began the daunting task of putting the country back together.During the performance, disgruntled Southern actor, John Wilkes Booth, snuck up behind the President’s box seat and shot Lincoln in the head.John Wilkes BoothHe swung down to the stage on a curtain, breaking his leg, and shouted what is commonly believed to be Sic Semper Tyrannis, Latin for thus ever to tyrants, he then ran out the backstage door and escaped on a horse. For days after the assassination, rumors of Booth’s arrest were appearing in the papers, but it wasn’t until April 26, twelve days after the assassination, that the twenty-five men from the 16th New York Cavalry surrounded Booth and one of his accomplices, David Edgar Herold, in the barn of John and William Garrett near Port Royal, Virginia.Negotiating with Booth, Lieutenant Doherty, the commander of the men, convinced Herold to surrender, but Booth maintained a defiant attitude even after the barn was set on fire and the walls were crumbling around him.Shown in the presidential booth of Ford’s Theatre, from left to right, are assassin John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, Clara Harris, and Henry RathboneOne of the soldiers, Thomas P. “Boston” Corbett, could see Booth through the slats in the walls and determined that Booth was going to run out of the barn with guns blazing. Even though it was ordered to take Booth alive, Corbett took it upon himself to shoot Booth.According to the Evening Star newspaper of Washington D.C., dated April 27, 1865, on page two, Corbett said he had intended to shoot Booth in the shoulder, but the bullet ended up in Booth’s neck and within three hours the assassin was dead.Boston Corbett. Library of CongressCorbett suddenly became the toast of Washington. People congratulated him and slapped him on the back, and Matthew Brady, Washington’s most celebrated photographer, took several photographs of him. The leaders in Washington, however, were upset that Booth had not been taken alive. Corbett was arrested for disobeying orders but was quickly released by Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of War.Corbett, who had been born in London, came to the United States with his parents in about 1839, when he was seven years old. He grew up in Troy, New York and made his living as a hatter.Boston CorbettHe later moved to Danbury, Connecticut and married a local woman. She and their infant child died in childbirth, causing Corbett to begin drinking, drifting around from town to town, and losing his desire for life. Confronted by a street preacher in Boston, Massachusetts, he saw the error of his ways and quickly became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was baptized and changed his name to Boston to honor the city in which he had received his awakening. His newfound religion took over his life, and he became a fanatic who sat on street corners loudly professing the glory of God. In order to remain completely pious, he castrated himself, went to dinner and a meeting, and then checked himself into a hospital.Sgt. Boston Corbett, Union Army.Corbett joined the army at the outbreak of the Civil War, but his religious zeal caused him to butt heads with his superiors, and he was court-martialed in 1863.He rejoined the army with the New York 16th but was captured by Colonel John Mosby and sent to Andersonville prison for five months where he endured some of the worst possible conditions faced by Union prisoners. In 1864, he was released and sent to the Army hospital in Maryland to recover. Corbett received a promotion to sergeant and was discharged in 1865.Wanted poster for John Wilkes Booth, John Surratt, and David Herold (1865)Corbett resumed his trade as a hatter and drifted around New England preaching and giving lectures until he had become so unhinged, he began believing people were after him.He thought the lawmakers in Washington and Booth’s sympathizers were looking for him, so he began carrying weapons with him at all times. He threatened anyone who disagreed with him over a religious matter, even his employers.John Wilkes Booth.Because of his paranoia, Corbett moved west to Kansas where he built a small dugout cabin with holes in the walls so he could shoot anyone who came near his property. He was arrested for threatening the townspeople, and during his hearing, threatened the entire courtroom with his two revolvers.Doctors have determined that the mercury used in the hat-making trade at the time was probably the reason for Corbett’s descent into insanity. According to American Scholar.com, the symptoms of mercury poisoning include fits of anger and violent behavior, exaggerated response to stimulation, diminished self-control, anxiety and insomnia—all of which Corbett demonstrated. In 1887, he received an appointment as doorkeeper for the Kansas House of Representatives, but less than a month later, he became convinced that the members of the House were plotting against him.Read another story from us: Unknown Civil War Faces are Being Identified Through Facial Recognition AppOn February 15th, he brought his guns to work and threatened the Speaker of the House, the press, and the staff. He was taken away to the insane asylum in Topeka. In 1888, he escaped on a stolen horse and bought a train ticket with the intention of going to Mexico. That was the last time anyone saw or heard from Boston Corbett.last_img read more

Tears of joy The Cubs win the pennant

first_imgThe Cubs will face the Indians in Game 1 of the World Series in Cleveland on Tuesday night. The precise weather forecast is unknown, but clearly hell has officially frozen over. Memories of Billy Goats and Leon “Bull” Durham are fading. Somewhere, “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks is smiling. The Cubs are headed to their first World Series since 1945, where they’ll meet the slightly less historically challenged Cleveland Indians in a battle of downtrodden fanbases suddenly infused with an unfamiliar emotion called “hope”.The Cubs last NLCS Game 6 at Wrigley with a chance to clinch a trip to the World Series was the infamous “Steve Bartman” game in 2003. It ended in disaster, a Game 7 loss to the Marlins, and familiar heartbreak for Cubs fans.Last night, any anxiety that the historically astute fans of the North Side had that history would repeat itself was eliminated when the Cubs jumped Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for two runs in the 1st inning. The early lead took the edge off like a six pack of Old Style. The all-consuming anxiety Cubs fans have been conditioned to anticipate over generations was never to come. This night was destined to be a celebration, fully absent of arrhythmia. VIDEO 15yearold Canelo Alvarez TKOd a grown man in his first pro

first_img Here’s Alvarez putting the hurt on an adult in his pro debut on October 29, 2005 at 15. The older guy isn’t exactly Macho Camacho, but it’s still an impressive TKO.Here’s a clip. We know, it isn’t exactly HD. Don’t @ us. Advertisement Mayweather/McGregor was the most hyped boxing match of the year, but Canelo Alvarez versus “GGG” Gennady Golovkin, tomorrow, is going to be ten times the fight. For those casual fans that are unfamiliar, Alvarez – 51-1-1 (34 KO) – is widely considered the best pound-for-pound boxer since Floyd Mayweather retired from fighting actual boxers. His only career loss came at the hands of Mayweather in a 12-round decision.Alvarez, came up through the ranks in Mexico, and he fought his first professional fight as a 15-year old (!) against a grown man, because his trainers couldn’t find opponents his own age.NBA players make the jump to the pros at 18 or 19, but in a gladiator sport like boxing, a 15-year old kid taking on all comers is way more badass.last_img read more

Learn to Measure Your Web Presence

first_img Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Problem Solvers with Jason Feifer 5 min read April 20, 2009 Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Flickr and Twitter are the most popular forms of social media today, giving members easy ways to connect with each other and stay updated based on their affinities and professional activities. But the activity taking place in social media is hard to measure, and there are still no clear standards on how to evaluate it before visitors show up on your doorstep, so to speak.Better ways of measuring social media through web analytics and search marketing are raising the bar on the quality of information entrepreneurs and site owners collect–and what they can do with it.What are we measuring?Until recently, measuring social media around a current or planned event, a brand, an advertising campaign or a topic was confined to measuring how often the events, brands, campaigns, topics and associated keywords were mentioned in mainstream media and on the web. Measurement wasn’t very precise and was similar to listening to chatter on the radio, with only indirect evidence, at best, that buzz around your brand, for example, did anything to increase sales. How we measured, until nowMost activity on a website can be measured, analyzed and optimized using site analytics (i.e., Google Analytics, WebTrends, Site Catalyst, Coremetrics). But it’s much harder to tell what visitors were exposed to before they reached a site or what they did shortly after leaving. Web analytics, search marketing and social media provide incredible opportunities to gain insight, but it’s become increasingly difficult to learn from the information or to apply it practically. Plus, our expectations as entrepreneurs are evolving and require more precision than what each platform provided.Convergence of web analytics, search and social mediaNew technologies are emerging to rescue us from the fragmented mass of data online. Here are a few examples:Tealium provides social media measurement that is merged with web analytics. Tealium’s patent-pending technology lets you see the traffic to your site by those who’ve been exposed to your press, blog or video coverage and integrates that information into your site analytics. For instance, you can track which visitors were exposed to videos or any other campaign connected with your business before arriving at your website. Visitors exposed to the marketing could be compared to those who were not exposed in terms of time spent on your website–an important indicator of how engaged a visitor is with website content. Using this information, business owners and brand managers can determine how effective their marketing is.Radian6 is the market leader in measuring social media buzz about your brand or website. It’s used mainly by public relations, communications and marketing departments at agencies, and it’s inexpensive, yet powerful enough to save a lot of work going into Twitter, YouTube, blogs, newsfeeds and search engines. Radian6 can be tuned to measure a user’s level of interest in news about your company. For example, Pacific Sunwear, a leading lifestyle specialty retailer rooted in youth culture with 932 stores nationwide, rolled out the Radian6 social media monitoring platform to track trends and better respond to customers in the online space. The company uses Radian6 to find out what is being said as it rolls out a new product line, including sentiment analysis and what sources are more influential in conversations around the brand. Combining Radian6 with WebTrends can give you a more integrated view of how new products increase traffic to specific product lines on your business’s website.Rapleaf and Unbound Technologies provide social intelligence using a “house list” of e-mail accounts or customers to generate a detailed map of customer interests via social networks where the customers have accounts. Unbound Technologies’ social monetizer will give a marketer a precise idea of what customers to target a specific campaign to. With these programs, it’s possible to increase conversions by reaching the right customers at the right times, and represents a merging of internal and social network data. Saavn and Verizon used Unbound Technology to find Bollywood dance enthusiasts on sites such as MySpace and Facebook and invite them to participate in Bollypop, the first-ever Bollywood-themed online dance competition. The chances for success greatly improve if people are already interested or exposed to marketing about your business.Searchmetrics , a popular search monitoring platform in Germany, integrates SEO page auditing, search ranking and web analytics platforms. Searchmetrics is useful for businesses doing a lot of search marketing and SEO that want to measure the search engine rankings for selected keywords along with the traffic driven to specific pages of a website. Most ranking platforms don’t provide an easy way to determine the traffic driven to your site as a result of its search-engine rankings. Because search engines pick up social media quite a bit, Searchmetrics could be used to measure how online buzz translates into SEO ranking which, in turn, results in traffic to a specific web page. Finally, Omniture SiteCatalyst now imports Twitter data in its site analytics solution. Twitter Analytics, an Omniture plug-in, is a fully configurable feature designed to track brand popularity by capturing comments on a brand from Twitter into Omniture SiteCatalyst in real time and setting up alerts. Merging social media such as Twitter with site analytics can help you determine how conversations on Twitter about your brand or website affects traffic to the site, so you can act immediately on Tweets as they’re posted. While none of these solutions is able to provide a full view of a brand’s data, web analytics, search marketing and social media are converging rapidly, which opens up a wealth of needed information to entrepreneurs. Turn Your Car Into Your Computer

first_img Register Now » 4 min read Add WiFi to Your Car Not that anyone needs more proof that we’ve left the 20th Century in the dust, but our cars are becoming indistinguishable from our laptops.Texting and driving still ranks as a stupid strategy, right up there with the idea for New Coke, but it is increasingly becoming very possible to be safely connected to the internet while behind the wheel, provided you do all the necessary clicking and typing before you press your foot on the gas. After all, you can listen to podcasts while driving, or listen to a favorite show on a video site like Hulu.com (but actually watching the show while driving = bad idea). You could theoretically talk on the phone–through Skype–while making your way to and from the office to your home. And there are probably numerous other ways you could use the internet while driving. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is way too complicated, and what’s wrong with the radio, anyway? Nevertheless, Chris Rauser, accessories manager for Chevrolet, points out, “If you carpool, you could have several people checking their email on their laptops, turning your car into a mobile office.” Rauser has been eagerly talking up his company’s new Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile, which recently debuted in some Chevrolet models as well as Buick, Cadillac and GMC vehicles.Rauser adds that because Chevrolet’s modem reach is 150 feet, salespeople on call may find it easier to show prospective clients their wares–they can take their own laptop into a client’s home, using their car’s modem to connect. If you’re thinking of turning your BMW or VW into a PC, or your Cadillac into a Mac, here are a few of the options available to you:Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile: As noted, this just hit the market. It works with Macs, laptops, PSPs, PDAs, iPhones, iPod Touches and probably anything else you can access the internet from. Once it’s installed in the car, you just use your computer as you would at any other Wi-Fi hotspot. The actual device costs $199 (provided you sign up for a two-year plan and probably other details, so check the fine print) and costs between $29 and $59 a month, depending on whether you go with their 1 GB or 5 GB data plan. More information can be found at the Autonet Mobile website.Volkswagen’s uConnect by Autonet Mobile: Yes, Autonet Mobile’s apparently everywhere. Earlier this summer, they partnered with Volkswagen, equipping their minivan, the Routan, with internet service. Pretty much everything you read in the preceding paragraph applies here. For more information, check out Volkswagen’s press releaseon their car connectivity.Ford Work Solutions: So far, this is just available in trucks–though I imagine cars will be coming down the road soon–and Ford is marketing it heavily to business owners, not to mention farmers, contractors and construction workers. Unlike the Chevrolet Wi-Fi system, with this, you actually buy a computer that goes with your Ford. The computer is $1,125, and the monthly plan is $25 a month for 25 MB or $50 for up to 5 GB of data. The computer includes Garmin GPS navigation, an AM/FM radio and a CD player, has a 6.5″ screen and comes with a wireless Bluetooth keyboard, and if you want, you can buy a wireless Hewlett-Packard printer. Some professionals may not like the fact that–for safety reasons–you can only access your computer and the internet when the vehicle is parked. A little harder to grasp is why you can’t stream the internet’s audio or video, even when you’re parked. But otherwise, it’s a very cool setup. For more information, check out Ford Work Solutions. The road ahead seems to indicate this isn’t a passing trend. In 2011, the Audi 8 will be connected, allowing you to stream video and music and whatever else you want while you’re zipping down the freeway, according to the blog Technology for the Soul. And recently the technological giant Alcatel-Lucent debuted its ng Connect program, which is working to bring dependable internet access to automobiles, with a promise on their web site that offers a glimpse of this technology’s future. “Soon the must-have option for new cars won’t be a sunroof or leather seats–it will be ultra high-speed, high-bandwidth connectivity,” the ng Connect web site promises, assuring all of us: “Your car will be connected.”More from Aol. New FCC Program Lets You Text 911 in an Emergency

first_img Hear from business owners and CEOs who went through a crippling business problem and came out the other side bigger and stronger. 2 min read May 15, 2014 Mobile has influenced how we work and play, and now it will affect how we ask for help in an emergency. This week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began rolling out their Text-to-911 program supported by major mobile carriers Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T.While the capability will be helpful in situations when making a call isn’t safe or for those who are unable to hear or speak, the program won’t be immediately available everywhere, as call centers across the country plan for the logistics and additional training needed to handle an influx of text messages. The FCC’s current target date to require all text providers to support the Text-to-911 program is December 31, 2014.Related: Our Collective Mobile Security Blind SpotThe counties where it is offered now are using only one mobile provider. If the service isn’t available and someone does send a text, the FCC requires the wireless companies to send a bounce-back message to let them know.So how does it work? You would type the emergency in the text and have to be sure to include your location. (Unlike a landline which would allow emergency services to pinpoint your address, the feature isn’t yet supported on the mobile platform for 911 calls.)  And for now, the program only supports texts, not images or videos.Related: Watch Out: Here’s Where Your Smartphone Is Most Likely to Get Stolen (Infographic) center_img Problem Solvers with Jason Feifer Listen Nowlast_img read more
